3 Steps For Getting Buy-in From Your Tribe

You’re standing on the podium in front of an audience of thousands. They are listening, they are reacting–they are hanging on every word you say. You’re a woman, and you have honed your skills to a razor’s edge. You have learned to use your natural abilities to become an inspirational leader.

Women have inborn talents and skills that give them a competitive advantage in the new economy. Look at Oprah Winfrey… without trying… she basically controls the world! Oprah was born to a poor family in rural Mississippi and lived a childhood of poverty and abuse. She was able to overcome the drawbacks of her youth by trusting in herself and taking advantage of her inborn strengths. Strengths more characterized of feminine qualities than masculine ones.

Like Oprah, you can inspire your tribe–and yourself–to buy-in to your vision of change & transformation. Start with these three simple steps:

1. Know what you stand for and what you are trying to accomplish. You may need to spend a great deal of time in questioning yourself and other team members to find these answers, but it’s important to be crystal clear on who you are and what you want. (Not what you think you ought to want, but what you really want.)

2. Learn how to communicate and use powerful language. Have the courage to appeal to your audience on an emotional level. The ability to speak through to emotions is one of a woman’s strengths. Her ability to share who she is and what she has learned from her experiences on an emotional level is one of the reasons Oprah is where she is today. 3. Learn to leverage your natural tendencies to connect, collaborate, and care. In the new economy, you have the ability to create your own network, your own tribe. Your emotional intelligence predisposes you to take hold of the power of social media and to be successful in this type of communication and leadership.

Changes in global culture has created a vacuum that technology has filled primarily with the use of social media, which frees us from stereotypes about gender and from the old school demographic labels of the past that no longer truly define us. Women have overturned traditional demographics and are now driving the action, according to Johanna Blakley, Deputy Director of a think tank that studies the impact of mass media and entertainment. The antiquated masculine model of leadership, “Command and Control” still echos in our ears and will most likely resonate within our culture for several years as “old school” executives struggle to keep control. In the new economy, leadership comes through connection, collaboration, and mentoring; a “feminine quality” that will continue to be more and more in demand. This is what women instinctively do. I predict a significant increase in women leaders across the globe, both politically and professionally, over the next three to five years, as women tap into their natural tendencies to manifest the transformation they seek in the world. This will bring with it a new definition of success as contributing not just to the pocketbook, but to our whole planet. Women do things for meaning… and that is the currency that attracts the masses.

Imagine a world with more women as leaders. It will be a world filled with more empathy, more happiness, and more health–a world with a lot more love, and a lot less war–and I can’t wait to be a part of it with you.

What if women ran the world?

It would be a kinder, gentler place with more reliance on spiritual and emotional intelligence and less on violence and war. It would be a world with more of a spirit of helping others achieve so that their accomplishments can reflect back on us. It would be a world with a philosophy of abundance, rather than scarcity and competition.

In many ways that world seems distant right now; but it is moving closer to us every day as women learn to leverage their natural advantages to be more of an influence.

Women are genetically gifted to leverage the trends of the new economy.

Success in today’s economy will come through inter-connectivity and collaboration, not through the cut-throat competition of the past. These trends are building, like a wave in the open ocean, coming ever closer as it prepares to crash on the shore. As a woman, you can ride this wave to success by leveraging your own, inborn tendencies.

1. Build connections as a path to problem solving.
Women’s brains are wired to be more effective at understanding and using emotions than men. Through years of evolution, women have perfected abilities of nurturing and building community. Women naturally take a holistic approach to solving problems. They know how to consider causes and relationships as a path to finding solutions. They are not afraid of emotion; on the contrary, they use emotion and empathy as a way to build community. This is emotional intelligence, and serves a the foundation of women’s strength.

The masculine perspective, on the other hand, is a focus on competition and winning. Until recently, history has valued the masculine model of business… win at all costs, manipulate the customer and establish relationships of control. The masculine model is responsible for the things in business that people despise… greed, selfishness, and slimy sales protocol. To the masculine point of view, if one side wins, the other must lose. A great metaphor for the masculine model of business is WAR.

Women’s strength in finding empathy makes them effective in the workplace in many ways. Because they are gifted at relating and communicating, they are able to serve the deeper needs of customers, employees and the community alike. A great metaphor for the feminine model of business is CONNECTION.

There is a physical reason for these differences. Neuroscientific studies of men’s and women’s brains have shown that a woman has eight times more neural connections in the right brain than a man has. The right brain is responsible for emotions, intuition, and holistic synthesizing… This means that women are literally designed to have better grasp on emotions,what emotions mean and how to use them to deepen and sustain authentic connections.

A woman’s brain is designed to give her the capacity to more effectively understand, experience and use emotions. Men’s brain structure causes them to be more sequential, analytical, and objective… but they are not as in touch with their emotions and what they mean. Women’s emotional intelligence lends itself to the spiritual approach. It’s through understanding emotions that we seek higher guidance.

2. Collaborate and communicate.
Women’s greater emotional intelligence and abilities to empathize make them more effective at collaboration and community building. This allows them to engage and to lead. These tendencies have become visible in the women’s movement and the social transformation arising from it. They can also be seen in the rise of social media. Social media depend on building networks, and this is where women thrive.

Women’s emotional intelligence makes them good at knowing how to build a network of people… a tribe. Women form the backbone of a tribal community. In the past, women built a community while the men went away to hunt. This natural ability will allow women to excel in the future.

The next step will be to use these community-building skills to inspire and to influence by design. Maureen Simon, on her website The Essential Feminine, says that women are poised to reduce economic stress, open new channels for personal and business experience, and access deeper power with the gifts innate in the feminine essence.

Through building relationships and connecting, you experience the joy of community. Through creating community, you build and support causes that serve these communities. You are now ready to ride the wave of the third trend in “Rise of The Woman”.

3. Take the opportunity for influential leadership roles.
The Dalai Lama says, “the future belongs to women, so teach your people on the importance of values.” Collaboration and community are needed to produce value in business, politics and organizations… and this is where you are born to excel. Women’s abilities in this field will lead to their success. We will see more and more leaders who are women. Those who foster these skills and embrace their natural advantages as women will be the first to take on more of these roles and will serve as an example to other women in an era of massive social change.

We are reaching the point the women’s movement has been fighting for.

With a predisposition and study in the skills of community-building and technology… women will be able to influence the masses, create collaborative outcomes, and manage public opinion.

You are able to take on roles formerly given only to men. There is no limit on the impact you can make as you provide opportunity for each other.

The masculine model of conflict and scarcity, once highly valued, has been discredited.  With the emergence of new technology there have been sweeping global changes that allow women to influence through inborn strengths and by design.

You are a woman of influence. You are genetically gifted to leverage the current and future trends of the new economy.  Envision yourself and your sisters taking on more and more leadership roles… in business and in government… taking full advantage of your feminine qualities of emotional intelligence, sharing and building community. Now that you have the opportunity for equality, think big. Give yourselves permission to aim high and build the dream of what history can tell us about the Rise of the Woman!

Just make sure you are working with a professional who has the systems and the right mojo. It is also important to have an alignment in your businesses, demographic and service offerings.

It just kept getting fuller and fuller… and I had never seen anything like it.

Dozens of Heart-Centered responses to the email I sent on Wed. 1/4 “Can I reveal something to you?” flooded my in box. I didn’t know it would strike such a deep chord. Here’s a short quote from that email.
